A woman bustles forward as the older demon indicates us, and she gestures for the girls to follow her. There’s a no-nonsense look on her face that worries me, thinking back to the room with the tubs, and I tilt my head to Aramon with fear in my eyes.

He looks down at me, my heart warming as I see myself reflected in his eyes, and he gives a single nod and a smile. Part of me wants to stay, but the rest of me screams that I should go while I have the chance, and I join Gwen in following the women off the ship.

Daevos is even more beautiful on the ground. I didn’t expect it to be, considering they can all fly, but it’s clear they love every part of their home. We pass immaculately tended gardens, dotted with sculptures and fountains. Demons zip over our heads but some stroll these gardens, stopping to throw curious glances at us. Something about it feels off, though. It takes me a moment to realize that I see hardly any women. The demons I see are nearly all male, from older, gray men to young males who cannot be much older than Aramon. There are few older women, here and there, and in their eyes I see guarded suspicion.

But I don’t think about it too long. Daevos is stunning. Just...overwhelming beauty, everywhere I look. Brilliant mosaics against the onyx rock, paintings in the hallways. I catch a glimpse of a library, and there’s soft music in the air. It’s wonderful to see so much art, after what I’ve seen today.

It makes me homesick for a life that I wish I could’ve had. If I’d been able to convince my dad that there was value in the arts, that maybe I wouldn’t make a good living but I could be happy, this could’ve been my life. Studying something with tangible meaning instead of endless theory. Theory has never made as much sense to me as a piece of art.

Gwen edges in next to me as we walk, clearly in awe. “It’s beautiful,” she murmurs. “I wouldn’t have guessed that assholes like him could live in such a wonderful place.”

I can’t help but laugh at that. “Why are you still thinking about him, if he’s such an asshole?”

“Can’t stop thinking about his smug face,” she mutters, rubbing the red gem that’s still at her throat. “Hope somebody can get these off,” she adds, trying to change the subject. “It’s chafing.”

For a moment I imagine Aramon’s big, strong hands against my neck, twisting the metal until it falls away, and the thought sends a pang of longing straight through me that makes me blush. I shouldn’t be thinking of him. I shouldn’t be imagining what his hands would feel like as they cup my body, pulling me into his hard muscles.

He’s a demon. An evil that I should fear. One I do fear, to some degree. I fear that he’ll keep me here, and I’ll never go home again.
